Today, a client let me know that they wanted to bring social media services in-house and as a result they’d no longer be working with me. I could tell they were worried about breaking the news to me. I reassured them this is great news.
I was overjoyed. Not because I didn’t enjoy working with them — I did! But because this is what I want for every client — for them to have a social media management team in-house. As a social media consultant, I am a support system — not a long-term solution. I’m here to take inventory of their audience, their online presence and build them a foundation that they can build upon, when they’re ready. Sometimes that takes time. Sometimes it happens right away. For this client, it had been four years.
In the beginning, I was creating content from scratch, building a following, establishing an online presence that reinforced their brand vision and mission. Soon, they were taking an active role in content creation, prioritizing the types of content they wanted to feature. Then, they were practically doing it themselves, with me in the wings, monitoring engagement and reporting on analytics. And now they’re ready to take it all on themselves, using the templates and frameworks we’ve established. It’s very exciting to watch.
I love helping businesses grow and strategically employ social and other digital media with communication goals in mind.
